CASTELLINA IN CHIANTI
CASTELLINA IN CHIANTI
Architecture and sites:
The medieval fortress, la Rocca, and the crenulated tower, la Torre,
dominate the main square in Castellina in Chianti: along the 14th
century walkway, up to the top of the tower, you will enjoy a
breathtaking view of Siena and Volterra, all the way to the mountains of
the Casentino. Via delle Volte is a charming covered walkway along the
main street of the town centre: together with the medieval walls, the
walkway guaranteed protection and security for the military.
Churches and parishes, including the Canonica di San Michele (St. Michael's Rectory) in Rencine and the parish churches of San Leonino and Santa Cristina, dot the countryside of vineyards, olive groves and woods, along with the tower, Torre di Grignano, in the locality of Molino Nuovo.
Towering over the town centre built around the neo-Romanesque church, Chiesa di Santissimo Salvatore, are Palazzo Ugolini Squarcialupi and Palazzo Bianciardi, two prestigious Renaissance buildings belonging to important families of Castellina in Chianti, now the site of a hotel and a private residence.
Tastings:
Visit the cellars of the Amo Castellina Consortium and experience an
unforgettable culture in Tuscan food and wine: on foot or in a vintage
car, riding a mountain bike or a Vespa, you can take scenic roads
winding through rows of grapevines all the way to the winery.
The winery staff will welcome you among the rows of Sangiovese grapes to tell you all about the characteristics of Chianti Classico. You will learn all about the steps required to turn the grapes in the vineyard to wine on the table, and the secrets and curiosities in the world of the Gallo Nero.
In cool and evocative cellars, you will see the reserve wines aging in oak barrels and be guided through a tasting to discover the unmistakable fragrances of Chianti Classico.

The Chianti Region
The Chianti Region
The name Chianti is of course indelibly linked with wine and, to digress
from the scenery for a moment, I must say that I’ve never had a bad
Chianti since I’ve lived here. Even paying just 3 or 4 euros for a
bottle will ensure you an eminently drinkable drop. The Chianti area is
not precisely defined but it is where you will find many of the images
of the Tuscany of films and postcards and I can point you in the
direction of the best back roads to ensure you don’t miss out on them in
person. As well, you will find stunning little towns such as San
Quirico, Montepulciano and San Gimignano which is your archetypical
Italian village perched on a hill. As you approach it along winding
roads that, if you are there at the right time of year, will be flanked
with oceans of sunflowers, you see it ahead of you, dominated by its
myriad of towers.

Holidays in the Marche and Tuscany
The Coast
From Gabicce Mare to San Benedetto del
Tronto, the forms and colours of the coastal landscape are constantly
changing. The white cliffs facing onto the Adriatic Sea alternate with
the deep green of the hills, spotted with the venerable villages and the
ochre hue of the long beaches. The coast, made up of fluvial deposits
of sand and clay, runs along in two straight and almost perfectly flat
portions divided by the Monte Conero promontory. Some beaches are
protected from erosion by breakwaters. There are 180 kilometers of coastline and 26 seaside resorts that face onto the Adriatic, together with the sea port of Ancona and 9 tourist ports. 16 Blue Flag Awards certify
the high quality of the waters and the related services, which offer
visitors a full range of beaches made of fine sand, gravel or rock,
reefs and palms. Many of the coastal villages present an upper village,
protected by the walls of a castle perched on a hill which was the
initial settlement, while the “marina”, a flat district running along
the shore, was only established later as a residential and business
area. In some of the seaside towns, museums of the sea have
been opened, such as the “Washington Patrignani” Museum in Pesaro and
the Piceno Mussel Museum in Cupra Marittima. Today, San Benedetto del
Tronto has a museum complex with four different sections: the Fish
Market houses, the Museum of Amphorae, the Fish Museum and the Museum of
the Marine Civilization of the Marche, while the Palazzo Bice
Piacentini, in the old district of the upper village, holds the Picture
Gallery of the Sea. Any number of sports can be
practiced along the Marche coast, including windsurfing, waterskiing,
sailing, diving, kitesurfing, swimming and beach volleyball.

Lake Como and its territory et son territoire
Lake Como
and its territory et son territoire
of Como extends the entire length of the lake up towards Switzerland, and comprises the so-called Larian peninsula jutting northward from the mainland and separating
the body of water into two distinct areas. On the southwest it borders the province of Lecco, and south the tip of the province of Milan.
With its tiny villages stacked perilously up the rocky slopes overlooking the lake, its lakeside resorts known the world over for their glorious settings, immersed in a natural environment of great beauty and exceptional conservation, for centuries the area has remained the favorite haunt of the selective traveller, coming over the Alpine passes to visit the Italian heartland.
Ensconced at the foot of the towering Alps, Lake Como’s peerless geographical situation affords an extraordinary spectacle of scenery that changes with the seasons and never tires the eye, while the mild climate and sheer variety of landscape combine to make the place unforgettable, unique.
